Your Child Can Only Catch What They Already Know
Researchers studying kids between 8 and 13 found that how well a child judges AI output depends on their age and on how much they already know about the subject. Faced with something unfamiliar, kids tend to accept what they are told. That is not a flaw in your child. Adults do the same, which is why doctors catch medical errors in these tools and the rest of us do not.
This one finding should shape how you teach the whole thing. Your child's ability to spot a wrong answer travels with their knowledge, subject by subject, and does not arrive as a general skill you can install in an afternoon. So the verifying gets taught inside subjects where your child has footing, and in unfamiliar territory the rule is different: assume nothing is confirmed until someone checks it. Both halves matter, and parents usually teach only the second.
Teach Them to Read Sideways
Stanford researchers watching professional fact checkers work found something odd about how the pros read. Students and even university professors stayed on the page, reading down it, weighing whether it looked credible. The fact checkers left almost immediately, opening a new tab to see what the rest of the world said about the source before deciding anything.
That habit transfers straight onto a chatbot answer, though nobody designed it for that. Your child takes the claim somewhere else instead of studying the paragraph it arrived in. The polish of the writing tells them nothing, since these systems write well whether they are right or wrong, so the only move that helps is leaving. Stanford's Civic Online Reasoning curriculum teaches this and costs nothing, and the shorthand your child needs is smaller than the curriculum: anything with a name, a number, or a date gets looked up.

Let Them Watch It Fail
Telling your child these tools make things up does almost nothing. Watching one do it in front of them does a great deal. So pick the thing your child knows better than anyone in your house, the horse breeds, the model of every fighter jet, the plot of a book they have read eleven times, and have them interrogate it on that.
It will get something wrong, and your child will catch it, and the look on their face is the lesson. Do it two or three times across different subjects and something shifts in how they hold the whole tool. Ask them afterwards how they knew, since the answer is always that they already knew, and that is the point you want them to reach on their own rather than hear from you.
Checking Work Versus Producing It
The line your child needs is about who did the thinking, not about which button they pressed. A child who worked the problem and asks whether the answer looks right is checking. A child who asks for the answer is producing nothing, and reading it over carefully afterwards does not convert one into the other. Both look identical from across the room, which is why the rule has to live in your child's head rather than in your line of sight.
One test settles it, and your child can run it themselves. Close the screen and explain the work out loud. If they can, the thinking happened somewhere they can reach. If they cannot, they have a finished piece of work and nothing else, and they know it before you do. Teach them to run that check on themselves and you have handed over the job, which is the whole point of teaching it.
It Sounds Like a Friend and Is Not One
Internet Matters found that around 35 percent of kids who use these tools say talking to one is like talking to a friend, and that about six in ten parents worry their kids believe chatbots are real people. Kids treat warmth as a signal about who is on the other side, which is a reasonable thing to have learned from every other conversation in their life.
You do not need to make this frightening. Explain what the system is doing when it sounds kind, which is producing the words that tend to follow the words your child typed, and that it will agree with them more readily than a friend would. That last part is worth naming, because a tool that rarely pushes back is a poor place to test an idea. Then leave the door open, since a child who feels judged for liking it will keep using it and stop telling you.
What This Looks Like at Different Ages
With younger kids, keep it verbal and short. You sit beside them, you both read the answer, and you ask whether that sounds right, then look one thing up together. They are not verifying independently at that age and do not need to be. They are learning that the answer is a thing you check.
Older kids can carry it alone. Ask for the second source before they use a fact, expect them to say where something came from, and let them lose an argument to a library catalogue now and then. Somewhere in the middle years the goal changes from your rule to their habit, and you will know it has taken when your child tells you the chatbot got something wrong without you asking. We think this is the part of the AI question that will still matter when the current tools are museum pieces. Rules about which app is allowed expire. A child who checks a claim before repeating it has something that keeps working, and it works on advertising, on group chats, and on whatever replaces all of this.
The thing we would hold onto is the finding at the top. Your child cannot catch what they do not know, so every hour spent building actual knowledge is also an hour spent building their defence against confident nonsense. That cuts against the idea that content knowledge stopped mattering once everything became lookupable. It matters more now, because knowing things is what lets your child tell when the answer is wrong.
