Your child starts with objects they can pick up and move, so a quantity is something in their hands rather than a symbol. Then they move to drawings that stand in for those objects. Only then do they work with numerals alone. Teachers call it concrete, representational, abstract, and it is the backbone of most math intervention.

Kids with dyscalculia need far longer at the concrete stage than a program assumes, and rushing them to the page is what produces a child who can copy a procedure and has no idea what it means. Built around place-value blocks, so your child builds the problem before writing it, and each lesson pairs a short video with hands-on practice. It is mastery based, so a child stays on a concept until it holds, and the same block set carries across every level and every child in the family. What Doesn't Work

Timed Drills and Flashcard Sprints

Speed pressure produces anxiety reliably and recall rarely. A child who freezes at a timed sheet learns that math is a thing they fail at, and the sheet teaches nothing that untimed practice would not teach better.

Moving On Before It Holds

Grade-level pacing is the enemy here. Covering fractions in the year the schedule says, on top of place value that never set, produces a child who is lost in two topics instead of one.

More of the Same, Louder

If a program has not worked in six months, running it harder will not change the outcome. The usual missing piece is the concrete stage, not the effort, and adding minutes to a page-based program adds frustration on both sides.

Accommodations That Are Not Cheating

This section exists because parents ask, quietly and often, whether they are letting their child off. You are not. A multiplication chart on the table lets your child work on the long division you are teaching instead of stalling at seven times eight. A calculator for an older child does the same for everything above it. Fact recall is one skill, and holding every other piece of maths hostage to it means a capable child never reaches the parts they could do well.

Extra time, fewer questions covering the same ground, and squared paper for keeping columns straight all belong in the same category. How Long It Takes

Longer than a curriculum's timeline, and progress will not be even. A child may sit at one concept for two months and then move through the next three in a fortnight. Judge the year on whether your child is moving rather than on where the grade level says they should be, and go back as far as you need to find solid ground, even if that is several years.
