Do Educational Games Teach Anything?

Your child has been playing a math game for forty minutes and is visibly enjoying it. Somewhere behind your relief sits a suspicion you cannot quite shake: is any of this going in.

Both loud answers are wrong. Games are not a shortcut to learning and they are not junk food either. The research is messier than either camp will tell you, and inside the mess there is one distinction that decides most of it, plus a five-minute test you can run at your kitchen table.

The Research Does Not Give You One Answer

Researchers have pooled hundreds of studies on learning games, and the results scatter. Some reviews find the benefit over ordinary teaching is barely there. Others find it moderate. Effect size is the measure they use, meaning roughly how big a difference an approach made, and across these reviews the estimates run from close to nothing up to a solid moderate.

A parent reading that wants somebody to pick a side. The honest reading is that the question was badly formed. Educational games are not one thing, any more than books are one thing, and asking whether they work is like asking whether paper works. What the spread tells you is that the individual game decides the outcome, which means you need a way to judge individual games.

The Distinction That Explains the Mess

The most useful idea here comes from research on what gets called intrinsic integration, published by Habgood and Ainsworth in 2011. The question they asked is simple: does it matter whether the learning is inside the fun part of the game or sitting next to it?

They built two versions of a math game called Zombie Division for children aged 7 to 11. In one, the math was the core action, the thing your character does to play. In the other, the same math appeared alongside the game as a separate task. Children learned more from the integrated version, and when they were left free to choose, they played it around seven times longer. It is one study with a modest sample, so hold it loosely. It also matches what parents observe.

Content Inside the Fun, or Content Gating the Fun

That gives you the test to apply to any app. Watch what your child does to progress. If the thinking is the move that advances them, the learning is inside the fun. If your child answers ten questions to earn a minute of play, the learning is a toll booth on the way to the fun, and their attention is on the fun.

Toll-booth games are not worthless. They can get a reluctant child to do repetition they would otherwise refuse, which is a real service. What they will not do is make the learning itself engaging, so the moment the rewards stop mattering, the whole thing stops working. Knowing which kind you have tells you what to expect when the novelty wears off, which it will.

Why Your Child Gets Better at the Game and Not the Skill

Kids are efficient. Given a system with a reward at the end, they find the shortest path to the reward, and if that path runs around the learning, they will take it without any intent to cheat. This is the quiet failure of learning games and it looks like success while it is happening, because your child is engaged, progressing and cheerful.

Watch what is getting faster. A child improving at the thinking will be quicker at the problems. A child improving at the interface will be quicker at the menus, the taps, the guessing pattern that gets past a question, and slower to explain anything. That second child is having a nice time and learning a user interface.

What Games Are Reliably Good At

Repetition on something your child has already been taught. That is the honest scope. A reward loop carries a child through the twentieth practice problem in a way your patience will not, and for kids who dread a subject, a game can be the difference between practice happening and a standoff.

What games do not do is teach a new concept. Learning something new needs explaining, questioning, and an adult who notices the exact moment your child stopped following. No app notices confusion, and most respond to a wrong answer by showing the right one, which is not teaching. Use games for the practice and keep the introduction with you.

There is a cost worth watching for too. A child who does all their practice inside a reward loop can start finding ordinary practice unbearable by comparison, the way a snack before dinner ruins an appetite. If your child will now do twenty problems in an app and none on paper, the game has not made them like math. It has made everything that is not the game feel worse, and that is worth catching early.

The Five-Minute Test

Take the game away and see what is left. A week after your child has been playing, put the same kind of problem in front of them on paper with no app open, and watch. If the skill survives outside the game, it is a skill. If it evaporates, your child learned the game.

A poor result is not a reason to throw the app out, and it is a reason to change what you expect from it. Move the game to where it belongs, which is after your child already understands something, and put the teaching back in your hands. Keep the app if your child enjoys it. Just stop counting the time it fills as time your child spent learning.
